Flying to Chile

Chile’s main airline LATAM (www.latam.com), connects both Europe and the US with Chile. British Airways (www.ba.com) also flies to Santiago Via Sao Paulo in Brazil (the second leg is operated by LATAM), Air France flies from London via Paris (www.airfrance.com), and Air Canada arrives from London via Toronto (www.aircanada.com)

The major airport is: Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport

Code: SCL

Flight times

  • From London: 17 hours (including stopover)
  • From New York: 10 hours 30 minutes.

At the airport upon arrival in Chile, visitors are issued a tarjeta de turismo (tourist card) by the immigration authorities. Travellers must retain this document and present it to immigration upon leaving the country.

Foreign nationals who do not need to apply for a Chile visa prior to traveling can obtain a Tourist Card (Tarjeta de Turismo) after they arrive in the country. The Chilean immigration authorities at the airport/point of entry will issue you with the Tarjeta de Turismo, which comes in an A5 paper format.

Bus from airport to Santiago de Chile

Santiago de Chile Airport is not connected to the city’s metro network, which consists of seven metro lines. It is possible to travel by bus between the airport and the city centre, the bus services of Centropuerto and Turbus connect the airport with the city of Santiago. Both buses depart from the Transportation Center between Domestic Terminal / T1 and International Terminal / T2. Centropuerto (blue buses) and Turbus (green buses) run all days of the week between the airport and the city, a bus leaves every 10 to 30 minutes in both directions. During the night you can travel by bus every 60 minutes to and from Santiago de Chile Airport. There is no difference in price, i.e. 1,900 CLP for a single journey and 3,400 CLP for a return. Tickets are available at the airport’s bus station called Transportation Center. On weekdays there is also a direct bus from the airport to Maipú a few times a day.

Routes and stops

Centropuerto provides a route to Los Héroes just southwest of the city centre, Turbus runs between Santiago de Chile Airport and Terminal Alameda Santiago / Estación Central. If you don’t have to be in the centre of the city, but want to travel by bus (Terminal Alameda and Terminal Santiago) or train (Estación Central) to other parts of Chile, it is better to choose Turbus. Centropuerto brings you closer to the city centre. Most tourists take the bus to Pajaritos metro station and then change to metro line 1 (L1 / red) in the direction of Los Domínicos. The journey time to Pajaritos metro station is 25 minutes, both bus services stop at this location. The metro takes another 15 minutes to the metro stations in the south of the city centre, such as Universidad de Chile and Santa Lucía. Metro tickets cost 640 CLP (Super Off-Peak), 720 CLP (Off-Peak) or 800 CLP (Peak) for a single journey. Please consult website Centropuertowebsite Turbus and website Metro de Santiago for more information.

In the city

Santiago has a dense public transportation network.

To use the public transportation network, you need to buy a “BIP” card first, at the counter in the subway. Then, you can charge the amount you want, from $100, in a subway station or in newsstands located in many parts of Santiago. The amount  credited is not refundable. Once you validate your card, you can travel for 2h, up to the limit of two bus/subway changes. If you only take the subway, you can change as many times as you want. By contrast, if you exit the subway, you will be charged again if you go back in the subway.
